The War of the Worlds (1953) is an American science fiction thriller film directed by Byron Haskin. It is the first of several feature film adaptations of H. G. Wells’ 1898 novel with the same title. A large object crashes near the small town of Linda Rosa, California, where Dr. Clayton Forrester, an atomic scientist, investigates and meets Sylvia Van Buren and her uncle, Pastor Collins. The three then attend an evening square dance but soon return to the crash site where they witness a hatch unscrewing and falling off of the object. As three men try to make contact with waving a white flag, they are obliterated by a heat-ray from inside the object. Soon after, U.S Marines surround the site as more reports come in of similar objects landing all over Earth and destroying cities.
Three war machines emerge from the Linda Rosa cylinder while Pastor Collins attempts contact but is instantly disintegrated by the aliens’ death ray weaponry. Despite repeated efforts by both ground troops and Air Force attack jets, the invaders’ force field proves impenetrable, leading to massive destruction and chaos on Earth. After fleeing in a small aircraft, Forrester and Sylvia soon experience a rough crash landing. Taking refuge in an abandoned farmhouse, they narrowly avoid being crushed by another falling cylinder. The house is then scanned by a lengthy cable equipped with an electronic sensor. Later, a strange extraterrestrial being enters and makes its way towards Sylvia, but hastily retreats when Forrester injures it.
