The Way (2010)
The drama film, The Way (2010), was directed, produced and written by Emilio Estevez and stars Martin Sheen. After the tragic loss of his estranged son Daniel in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, American ophthalmologist Dr. Thomas Avery travels to France. Initially intending to retrieve his son’s body, Tom is moved by grief and decides to honor Daniel’s memory by embarking on the ancient spiritual trail where he passed away, carrying his ashes with him. Along the way, Tom encounters others who are also seeking greater meaning in their lives. Among them is Joost, an overweight man from Amsterdam who shares his journey towards weight loss for his brother’s upcoming wedding and rekindling romance with his wife. Reluctantly, Tom joins forces with three fellow pilgrims on this life-changing trek.
The first member of the quartet is a friendly extrovert who often leads the way on their journey with Tom. Sarah, a Canadian who is escaping from an abusive relationship, joins them and reveals that she hopes to quit smoking through this pilgrimage. Jack, a travel writer from Ireland, had once aspired to become a great author like William Butler Yeats or James Joyce, but never wrote the novel he had envisioned. He is the final addition to their group and has been struggling with ‘writer’s block’. As they trek along the Camino, they encounter other travelers such as two Frenchmen, a young Italian, and Father Frank, an elderly priest from New York. Tom occasionally sees visions of his friend Daniel among these strangers. Initially distant towards his companions, Tom gradually warms up to them throughout their journey together.
