The Whole Truth (2016) is an American legal thriller film directed by Courtney Hunt and written by Nicholas Kazan. Defense attorney Richard Ramsay takes on the case of 17-year-old Mike Lassiter, who is accused of murdering his wealthy lawyer father Boone. As a personal friend of Boone’s, Ramsay feels the weight of responsibility to save Mike, but his client’s unwavering silence proves to be a challenge. With the help of young lawyer Janelle Brady, daughter of another close colleague, Ramsay hopes to build a strong defense for Mike. During the trial, several witnesses are called to testify, including a flight attendant who recalls seeing tension between father and son on a charter flight from Stanford University. In a flashback, we see that Mike wanted to attend Reed College but was forced by his father to attend Stanford instead. Another witness, the first police officer on the scene, testifies that she heard Mike mutter ‘I should’ve done it long ago’ and confirms that his fingerprints were found on the murder weapon.

According to the Lassiters’ neighbors, as Mike grew up, his relationship with Boone gradually deteriorated. They also mention that Boone displayed a haughty demeanor towards those around him, including his family. Through flashbacks, it is revealed that Boone engaged in multiple affairs and treated his wife, Loretta, with bossiness and condescension both publicly and privately. During the trial, Loretta recounts enduring emotional and physical mistreatment from Boone over many years, even on the day of his death. She tearfully recalls how she went to shower after their argument and returned to find him dead. In tears, she reveals that Mike confessed to being responsible for Boone’s death. As proof of Boone’s cruelty, Ramsay presents photographs of Loretta’s bruised body taken the day after Boone’s passing.
