Reluctantly, Kate ends things with Merton and avoids any further contact. A few months later, Aunt Maud hosts a dinner where Kate is introduced to Milly Theale, a wealthy American orphan traveling Europe with her companion Susan Stringham. Despite her usual cynicism, Kate is drawn to Milly’s charming personality and the two develop a strong bond.
