The World’s End (2013), an apocalyptic sci-fi comedy film, was created by director Edgar Wright and screenwriters Simon Pegg and Wright. In an effort to relive his youth, 40-year-old Gary King, who struggles with alcoholism, reconnects with childhood friends Oliver Chamberlain, Peter Page, Steven Prince, and Andrew Knightley. He convinces them to join him on the ‘Golden Mile’, a pub crawl through their hometown of Newton Haven that ends at the World’s End pub. The group had attempted this feat in their youth but failed to complete it. Andy, now sober after a drunk driving accident involving himself and Gary years earlier, reluctantly agrees to join when Gary lies about his mother’s death.
On their pub crawl, the group runs into Oliver’s sister, Sam, whom Gary and Steven both had a crush on back in school. While Gary is in the bathroom of the fourth pub, he gets into a scuffle with a teenager who turns out to be an android. When his friends come looking for him, they discover multiple other androids and engage in a battle. It becomes clear that the town is inhabited by these ‘Blanks’, as they call them. To avoid suspicion, Gary insists they continue their pub crawl. They come across Sam again, and join forces to fight off Blank versions of her childhood friends, nicknamed the ‘twins’. Sam joins them for the journey as they learn from Basil, a local conspiracy theorist who has not yet been replaced by a Blank.
