The Yards (2000)
The Yards (2000), a film directed and written by James Gray and Matt Reeves respectively, follows Leo Handler as he celebrates his release from prison at his mother Val’s house in Queens, New York. At the surprise party, Leo reconnects with Willie Gutierrez, who thanks him for taking the fall for their group of friends. In need of employment to support his mother’s medical condition, Leo considers working for Erica Soltz’s stepfather, Frank Olchin, at the Electric Rail Corporation in Maspeth. During a meeting with Frank the next day, he offers to fund Leo’s studies in a machinist program. However, when Leo asks if Willie can also join the company immediately, Frank declines.
That evening at a nightclub, Willie sympathizes with Leo as he recalls Frank’s failed attempt to secure his spot in a machinist program. Later, at Brooklyn Borough Hall, Willie reveals the corruption present in the contract system for subway repair work. After a contract awarding hearing, Hector Gallardo of Weltech Corporation, a minority-owned company, approaches Willie about joining their firm. However, Willie declines and takes Leo to Roosevelt Island instead. There, he bribes an official responsible for awarding contracts. The following night, while visiting the Sunnyside repair yards with Leo, Willie and his team intentionally damage Weltech’s work in hopes of lowering their quality rating and limiting their ability to obtain contracts.
