The Year of Living Dangerously (1982)
The romantic drama film, The Year of Living Dangerously (1982), was both directed and co-written by Peter Weir alongside David Williamson. Based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Christopher Koch, it tells the story of Guy Hamilton, a novice foreign correspondent sent to Jakarta by his Australian TV network. In Jakarta, he is welcomed into a tight-knit community of fellow correspondents from various countries, as well as diplomatic personnel and Billy Kwan, a highly intelligent Chinese Australian man with dwarfism and a strong moral compass. However, Hamilton struggles initially due to his predecessor’s abrupt departure without introducing him to their shared contacts in Indonesia. The journalist community shows little sympathy towards him, as they are constantly vying for information from Sukarno’s regime, the PKI, and the Indonesian military.
Despite this, Billy introduces Guy to influential political figures and helps set up interviews. Through Billy, Guy meets Jill Bryant, an attractive assistant at the British embassy. While Billy and Jill are good friends, he slyly tries to manipulate her interactions with Guy. Initially hesitant due to her impending return to the UK, Jill eventually falls for Guy. Upon learning that the Chinese communists have armed the PKI, Jill shares this knowledge with Guy in order to protect him, but he is determined to cover the upcoming communist uprising in Jakarta. This decision shocks Billy and Jill who then cut ties with Guy. Left alone with American journalist Pete Curtis and his secretive driver Kumar (a member of the PKI), Guy continues his work.
