The satirical drama series, The Young Pope (2016), was created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino for Sky Atlantic, HBO, and Canal+. Lenny Belardo, a young cardinal from New York, becomes Pope after the leading contenders of the Papal conclave are unable to gain enough votes. As a compromise candidate, he takes on the name Pius XIII and immediately begins to challenge long-standing traditions and practices within the Vatican. In one of his first actions as Pope, he declares that common people are not permitted to see him and appears shrouded in darkness during a public appearance in St. Peter’s Square. During a meeting with the Cardinal Secretary of State, he also announces his intention to personally involve himself in political matters within the Holy See, effectively taking control of the Secretariat of State.
Concerned by the Pope’s drastic changes to the church, senior cardinals devise a plan to manage his ideas and prevent further disruption. In an attempt to address their concerns, the Pope appoints Sister Mary, his childhood caretaker from the orphanage, as his chief adviser and publicly denounces select cardinals. He also issues a warning that he will seize all properties belonging to certain religious orders, specifically targeting the Franciscans, if they do not submit to his sole leadership. As a symbolic gesture of his power, the Pope demands that the Papal tiara be retrieved from a museum and returned to the Vatican as his personal crown. Despite this show of authority, the cardinals make one last effort to control the Pope by arranging a meeting with Italy’s Prime Minister. However, their efforts are met with intimidation and threats from the Pope, who refers to an outdated papal procedure allowing him to influence local elections in Italy. Growing concerned that the Pope may be attempting to revive the Papal States, it is discovered that he is actually suffering from severe depression and has been acting out of a deep desire to confront his estranged parents who abandoned him in his youth.
