Thelma (2024)
Thelma (2024) is an American comedy-drama film written, directed and edited by Josh Margolin. The ninety-three-year-old resides alone in Los Angeles. Her grandson Daniel ‘Danny’ Markowitz, who often visits and takes care of her needs, doesn’t have his life together. Despite their close relationship, Thelma feels that Danny’s constant help comes across as condescending. In a distressing turn of events, a fraudulent caller impersonates Danny and convinces Thelma to send $10,000 to a local address. After involving her daughter Gail and son-in-law Alan in the situation, Thelma discovers that Danny was not actually in trouble and she has been scammed. With no assistance from the police and determined not to let the scammer win, Thelma avoids her family and heads out on her own to retrieve the money.
Thelma’s attempt to reach out to her old friends for assistance proved unsuccessful as most of them had either passed away or moved away. She then turned to Ben, a friend and widower living in assisted living, whom she had been neglecting since her husband’s passing. Together, they rode on Ben’s expensive two-person scooter to the home of Mona, their elderly acquaintance. In a daring move, Thelma managed to secure Mona’s gun while Ben kept her occupied. Meanwhile, Danny, Gail, and Alan frantically searched for Thelma but were unable to find her. Amidst a heated argument with his parents, Danny shared his frustrations about his recent breakup and lack of skills besides taking care of Thelma. He feared that he was going nowhere in life.
