Thelma & Louise (1991), an American crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott and written by Callie Khouri, follows the journey of two friends as they escape their mundane lives in Arkansas for a weekend getaway at a fishing cabin in the mountains. Thelma is married to a disrespectful and controlling carpet salesman named Darryl, while Louise works as a sassy waitress in a diner and has an on-and-off relationship with musician Jimmy. As they make their way to the cabin, they make a pit stop at a roadhouse bar where Thelma ends up dancing with an overly flirtatious stranger named Harlan Puckett. When he becomes too aggressive, Louise steps in and threatens him at gunpoint. However, as they leave the bar, Harlan makes one last crude remark that sends Louise into a fit of rage, causing her to shoot him fatally. Without hesitation, the two women speed off into the night.

While staying at a motel, Thelma and Louise discuss their next move. Thelma believes they should report the attempted rape to the police, but Louise is hesitant due to potential disbelief and legal repercussions. They ultimately decide to escape to Mexico, with one condition: Louise insists on avoiding Texas due to a past incident she does not wish to disclose. During their journey, they meet a charismatic drifter named J.D., who catches Thelma’s attention. Louise contacts her partner Jimmy for financial support and he surprises her by delivering the money in person. After spending the night together, Jimmy proposes to Louise but she turns him down. Meanwhile, J.D. manages to charm his way into Thelma’s room and they end up sleeping together.
