The British sci-fi film Things to Come (1936) was produced by Alexander Korda, directed by William Cameron Menzies, and written by H. G. Wells. John Cabal, a businessman, resides in Everytown in southern England in 1940 and is unable to enjoy Christmas due to the possibility of war reported on the news. Harding, his guest, shares his concerns while Pippa Passworthy remains optimistic, believing that the war may not happen or if it does, it will propel technological advancements forward. However, an air raid that night leads to mobilization and a global war against an unnamed enemy. Cabal joins the Royal Air Force as a pilot and displays bravery by attempting to save an enemy pilot he had shot down.
The war persists into the 1960s, causing people to forget its cause and leading humanity into a new era of darkness. Throughout the globe, cities are reduced to ruins, economies destroyed by hyperinflation, and technology scarce with the exception of depleted air forces. The infamous ‘wandering sickness’, spread through aerial bombings, causes victims to aimlessly wander in a zombie-like state before succumbing to death. This devastating plague claims the lives of half of humanity and eliminates all forms of governmental control. By 1970, Rudolf, also known as the ‘Boss’, reigns as leader over what remains of Everytown and combats the sickness by shooting those who have been infected.
