Thinner (1996) is a body horror film by American director Tom Holland and writers Michael McDowell and Holland, based on Stephen King’s 1984 novel of the same name. The protagonist, Billy Halleck, is an overweight lawyer from a wealthy background who resides in Connecticut with his wife Heidi and their daughter Linda. Recently, he successfully defended Mafia boss Richie ‘The Hammer’ Ginelli in court and is now celebrating his acquittal on a murder charge. While trying to persuade him to overcome his food fixation, Heidi offers Billy oral sex while he drives. However, his focus is disrupted and he ends up accidentally hitting and killing an elderly Romani woman named Suzanne Lempke. Despite being tried for manslaughter, Billy’s friend Judge Cary Rossington acquits him after getting police chief Duncan Hopley to commit perjury.
Filled with rage over the injustice, Suzanne’s father, Tadzu Lempke, curses Billy on the courthouse steps, softly whispering ‘thinner’ as he touches his face. Soon after, Billy’s weight plummets without any changes to his diet or exercise routine. Worried about a possible cancer diagnosis, Heidi contacts Dr. Mike Houston while Billy suspects his wife of infidelity. However, Billy soon discovers that he is not alone in experiencing strange transformations; both Rossington and Hopley have also fallen victim to the curse. Rossington now resembles a grotesque lizard while Hopley’s face and hands are covered in putrid ulcers. Tragically, both men end their own lives. In desperation, Billy tracks down the Romani camp but is met with resistance from Tadzu who banishes him without offering any aid.
