Thirteen Lives (2022)
Thirteen Lives (2022) is a biographical survival film by director and producer Ron Howard, with a screenplay by William Nicholson. The movie tells the story of the Tham Luang cave rescue, which took place in 2018. On June 23rd of that year, twelve boys from the junior football team “Wild Boars” and their assistant coach Ekkaphon Chanthawong decide to explore the Tham Luang cave after practice. When they fail to show up for a birthday party arranged by their parents, their families head to the caves. To their horror, they discover that the boys are missing and their bikes are left behind at the cave entrance. Frantic, the parents immediately contact emergency services for help. Captain Arnont and his Royal Thai Navy SEAL team arrive to search for the missing group, but face challenges as the dive proves too difficult to locate them.
Local British caver Vernon Unsworth, an expert on the complex and hazardous cave, recommends the authorities reach out to the British Cave Rescue Council. In response, fellow British cavers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen journey to Thailand and undertake a dive, successfully locating the boys and their coach four kilometers from the entrance. Tragically, during an effort to provide air tanks to sustain the group until rescue, former Thai Navy Seal Saman Kunan loses his life. In the meantime, amidst challenging weather conditions, numerous volunteers work tirelessly while a water technician from Bangkok secures permission from nearby farmers to divert water from the mountain onto their fields. Unfortunately, this results in damage to their crops.
