Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
The crime drama film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), written, directed, and co-produced by Martin McDonagh, follows Mildred Hayes in the fictional town of Ebbing. Seven months after her teenage daughter Angela was raped and murdered, Mildred is still grieving and frustrated with the lack of progress in the investigation. To draw attention to the case, she rents three abandoned billboards near her home and displays provocative messages: ‘Raped While Dying’, ‘And Still No Arrests?’, ‘How Come, Chief Willoughby?’. Her actions catch the attention of Bill Willoughby, the local chief of police who has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. He tries to reason with Mildred during a visit to her home but she remains firm on keeping up the billboards. Despite his renewed efforts and pressure from townspeople like Jason Dixon – an alcoholic police officer – who tries to intimidate Red Welby (the billboard renter), Willoughby’s attempts to solve the case are unsuccessful. The controversial billboards also cause conflict between Mildred and her dentist who sympathizes with Willoughby’s situation.
This leads to a confrontation during a dental appointment where Mildred takes matters into her own hands. Willoughby brings her in for questioning and accidentally coughs up blood into her face. He has her released and is hospitalized, but discharges himself against medical advice. The billboards have further strained Mildred’s relationship with her son, Robbie, and she recalls their last argument before Angela’s murder. Her abusive ex-cop ex-husband Charlie confronts her about the billboards and reveals that he had previously denied Angela’s request to stay with him shortly before her death. At his mother’s suggestion, Dixon arrests Mildred’s friend Denise on minor drug possession charges in an attempt to pressure Mildred. Willoughby spends a peaceful day with his wife, Anne, and their two daughters before tragically committing suicide later that night to spare them from witnessing his slow decline. In response, Dixon assaults Welby and throws him out of a second-story window.
