Three Kings (1999)
American filmmaker David O. Russell released Three Kings (1999), a darkly humorous war movie based on a story by John Ridley. Set after the Gulf War, it follows a group of bored U.S. soldiers tasked with wrapping up loose ends. To pass the time, they throw wild parties at night. Among them is Major Archie Gates, an Army Special Forces soldier who trades sex for stories with journalist Cathy Daitch. Their escapades are interrupted by Adriana Cruz, a TV reporter assigned to their unit. During a search of an Iraqi officer, Sergeant First Class Troy Barlow and his best friend Private First Class Conrad Vig discover a map hidden in the officer’s body. To decipher it, Troy turns to Staff Sergeant Chief Elgin for help – and soon Major Gates joins them after receiving information from Adriana.
Archie manages to convince the others that the document they came across is actually a map of bunkers near Karbala containing stolen gold bullion from Kuwait. This leads them to come up with a plan to steal the gold themselves. In order to keep Adriana at bay, Gates enlists the help of Specialist Walter Wogeman under false pretenses. The next day, they embark on their mission and while searching through the loot taken from Kuwait, they stumble upon both the gold and an interrogation taking place. As they make their escape, Amir’s wife begs for their help in freeing anti-Saddam dissidents, but unfortunately gets executed by Iraqi forces. The group makes a decision to liberate the Iraqi prisoners, which results in a dangerous shootout.
