Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022) is a fantasy romantic drama film directed and produced by George Miller. Written by Miller and Augusta Gore, it is based on the 1994 short story ‘The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye’ by A. S. Byatt. Alithea Binnie, a British scholar with occasional hallucinations of demonic figures, unleashes a trapped Djinn during a trip to Istanbul when she purchases an antique bottle. The Djinn grants Alithea three wishes, but she argues against wishing and accuses the Djinn of being a trickster. In response, the Djinn shares three tales from his past – one about the Queen of Sheba who was imprisoned by King Solomon to keep her for himself, another about Gülten, a concubine in Suleiman the Magnificent’s palace who wished for love and a child with his son Mustafa.
Suleiman’s beloved concubine has a cunning plan to secure the throne for her son. She plants the idea in Suleiman’s mind that Mustafa will rebel against him and is not fit to lead the kingdom. The Djinn, aware of the danger, tries to warn Gulten, but she is inexperienced and unaware of the political games played among the ruling class. As a result, Mustafa is killed and Gülten flees, leaving behind the Djinn’s bottle. Despite the Djinn’s efforts to save her, Gulten, who is pregnant at this time, is also executed on Suleiman’s orders before she can make her last wish. The Djinn spends over a century wandering invisibly and without form within the palace walls, as his bottle remains hidden. Young princes Murad IV and Ibrahim almost come across the bottle but are unsuccessful in uncovering it. Years later, Murad IV becomes a brutal ruler known for his violence and eventually succumbs to alcoholism. Meanwhile, Ibrahim develops an obsession with voluptuous concubines and takes over as sultan after Suleiman’s death.
