Director Martha Coolidge brought us the enchanting American fantasy drama film, Three Wishes (1995). Tom Holman, a devoted family man, is struggling with financial difficulties that have caused him to become emotionally distant from his loved ones. During a car ride with his wife and daughters, they almost hit a man walking into a cemetery. This triggers a flashback of a similar encounter from Tom’s past. Flashing back to 1955, we meet Jean Holman, a single mother raising her sons Tom and Gunny on her own. After their father went missing in action during the Korean War, Jean has been tasked with providing for her family alone. Missing his father’s presence deeply, Tom often feels left out of typical father-son activities like baseball and camping in their community.

To add to their struggles, Gunny has been experiencing unexplained stomach pain and Jean is worried about his undiagnosed medical condition. During one of their drives, Jean accidentally hits a drifter named Jack McCloud and breaks his leg. Feeling pity for him, Jean kindly invites Jack and his female dog Betty Jane to stay at her home while he recovers from his injured leg. Despite some initial challenges in adjusting to this new way of living, Jack quickly becomes a beloved member of the household. He forms a strong connection with Tom as they bond over baseball training sessions. On the other hand, Gunny suspects there may be more to Jack and Betty Jane than meets the eye and is determined to uncover the truth. Soon enough, Gunny discovers that Betty Jane is actually a genie in disguise.
