Thumbsucker (2005)

Thumbsucker (2005) is an American indie comedy-drama film by first-time director Mike Mills. It follows the story of Justin Cobb, a timid 17-year-old living in suburban Oregon with his family of four. His persistent thumb-sucking has caused significant dental issues, much to the disapproval of his father. To avoid making his dad feel old, Justin refers to his parents as Mike and Audrey. Audrey, a nurse, becomes infatuated with actor Matt Schramm and enters a contest to win a date with him. She claims it’s all in good fun but is overly concerned with looking attractive for the opportunity. Meanwhile, Justin struggles on the school’s debate team, which he joined to get closer to environmentalist classmate Rebecca.
Though he tries to pursue a relationship with her, she ultimately rejects him when he fails to open up about his thumb-sucking habit. During Justin’s routine appointment with his orthodontist, Dr. Perry Lyman notices that he is still sucking his thumb. In an attempt to break the habit, Dr. Lyman uses hypnosis and encourages Justin to imagine his thumb tasting like echinacea while connecting with his ‘power animal’, a deer. This technique proves successful as Justin no longer enjoys the taste of his thumb, but he struggles without this coping mechanism. After Justin and his brother plot to sabotage Dr. Lyman during a bike race with their father, Justin’s school counselor suggests that the Cobbs consider giving him Ritalin.
