Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974)
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), an American crime comedy film written and directed by Michael Cimino, follows the story of a young man named Lightfoot who impulsively steals a car. Meanwhile, an assassin targets a preacher giving a sermon and chases him on foot. By chance, Lightfoot comes to the preacher’s rescue when he unintentionally runs down the assailant and offers him a ride. As they continue to evade danger, they bond over stealing cars and visiting prostitutes. However, Lightfoot soon discovers that his companion is actually infamous bank robber ‘Thunderbolt’, hiding under the guise of a minister after robbing a Montana bank using an Oerlikon 20 mm cannon. Thunderbolt reveals that his own gang members are after him, thinking he betrayed them by keeping the loot from their last heist.
Together, he and Lightfoot embark on a journey to Warsaw, Montana, in search of the hidden money in an old one-room school. Upon arrival, they are faced with the disappointing realization that the schoolhouse has been replaced by a modern facility. Unfortunately, their pursuers – the notorious Red Leary and compassionate Eddie Goody – catch up to them and take them hostage. Transported to a secluded spot, Thunderbolt manages to defeat Red in a physical altercation, during which he also reveals his loyalty to the gang. Despite their earlier blunder involving Dunlop, Lightfoot suggests another robbery at the same company as before, but without their electronics expert. In order to acquire necessary equipment for the heist, they both secure employment in the city where the bank is located.
