Tidal Wave (2009)
Tidal Wave (2009) is a disaster film from South Korea helmed by JK Youn. Local Haeundae District resident Man-sik suffers the tragic loss of Yeon-hee’s father while out at sea during the 2004 tsunami, due to an error in judgement. This causes him to distance himself from Yeon-hee, who manages an unlicensed seafood establishment, despite her efforts to build a relationship. Dong-choon and Seung-hyun’s grandmother become involved in illicit activities with Seung-hyun to earn quick cash, but are eventually apprehended by the authorities. In the meantime, Man-sik prepares for a marriage proposal to Yeon-hee. Geologist Kim Hwi reconnects with his ex-wife Yoo-jin, who has since moved on with her new significant other Hae-chan and their daughter Ji-min. They keep Hwi’s true identity as Ji-min’s biological father a secret, fearing how she may react.
Hee-mi, a wealthy college student from Seoul, accidentally falls into the sea while on a yacht. Luckily, Hyeong-sik, the younger brother of Man-sik who is a lifeguard, rescues her. However, Hee-mi’s ‘violent’ rescue causes her to become annoyed and she begins to follow him around. Eventually, their annoyance turns into love as the two spend more time together. Meanwhile, during a fireworks display, Man-sik proposes to Yeon-hee and she responds by hanging a ribbon outside her restaurant the following day as a symbol of acceptance. However, when Man-sik goes to see the ribbon on the day after, he meets Dong-choon instead. Dong-choon reveals that he shared information about Yeon-hee’s father’s death with her and this causes Man-sik to become angry and attack him. As they fight, they notice a flock of birds flying away.
