Time Out of Mind (2014)
Time Out of Mind (2014) is an American drama film written and directed by Oren Moverman. Set in the bustling cityscape of New York, the story follows George, a mild-mannered but confused man who is kicked out of an apartment by Art. However, it turns out he was just staying at a friend’s place, known as ‘Sheila’, who had been evicted. From the beginning, it’s clear that George has fallen on hard times, claiming his wallet was stolen and struggling to get assistance through phone calls. He ends up sleeping on the streets and eventually finds himself seeking warmth in a hospital emergency room, where staff nurse Maire shows him compassion. Despite denying his homelessness to others and even himself for most of the film, George resorts to pawning his belongings for liquor before settling for beer.
Eventually, he finds a bed at a homeless shelter and befriends Dixon, a kind but mentally unstable fellow resident. As George faces the challenges of applying for public benefits, Dixon stands by his side. A pivotal meeting with advocate Laura brings about newfound realizations of the help he truly needs. In an attempt to reconcile with his estranged daughter Maggie, George’s vulnerable state is evident. He appears determined to reconnect with her, despite lingering guilt. As the story unfolds and we learn more about George’s character and background, it becomes clear that he has become increasingly anhedonic; finding joy only in occasional six-packs. The story concludes as George reaches out to Maggie, seeking forgiveness and support.
