The historical science fiction adventure film, Timeline (2003), directed by Richard Donner, follows Professor Edward Johnston and his team as they lead an archaeological study of Castlegard village in Dordogne, France. The village was where Lady Claire, sister to Arnaut de Cervole, was executed in 1357. Her death played a crucial role in France’s victory over the English in the Hundred Years War. Alongside Johnston are Scottish archaeologist André Marek, students Kate Erickson, Josh Stern, François Dontelle, and his son Chris. During their excavation of a nearby monastery, they come across a sarcophagus containing the remains of a French knight with a lopped ear holding hands with his lady – a rare ritual for that time period. Curious about possible tampering at the site, Johnston visits ITC Corporation’s American headquarters – the project’s sponsor – to inquire further.
The students stumble upon an old lens from Johnston’s bifocals and a plea for assistance, both dating back over 600 years. After reaching out to ITC, the company extends an invitation for them to visit their headquarters. Here, they are introduced to ITC president Robert Doniger and vice-president Steven Kramer. Doniger discloses that during their efforts to perfect teleportation technology, they stumbled upon a stable wormhole leading to 1357 Castlegard. Johnston was invited to witness this discovery firsthand, but his group has yet to return. The company now wishes for the students to journey back in time and locate him. Everyone except Josh volunteers for the mission at hand. To ensure their safety in the past, the volunteers are stripped of all modern gadgets except for pendant-shaped markers that will help them return home.
