Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) is a British Cold War spy thriller film directed by Tomas Alfredson. The script was written by Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan, adapted from John le Carré’s novel of the same name. In 1973, ‘Control’, head of British intelligence, sends agent Jim Prideaux to Budapest on a mission to uncover a mole within their ranks. However, Prideaux is shot during the operation and Control subsequently dies. Sir Percy Alleline takes over as Chief, with Bill Haydon as his deputy and Roy Bland and Toby Esterhase as his assistants. Meanwhile, they have been receiving Soviet Intelligence through Operation ‘Witchcraft’. Agent Ricki Tarr informs Permanent Undersecretary Oliver Lacon that there is a traitor in the Circus. Keen to follow up on Control’s suspicions, Lacon enlists Smiley’s assistance in investigating the matter with the help of Tarr’s superior Peter Guillam and retired Special Branch officer Mendel.
During his investigation, Smiley speaks with analyst Connie Sachs, who was fired after making the connection between Soviet official Alexei Polyakov and a possible mole in London. Tarr informs Smiley of Irina’s offer to reveal the identity of the mole in exchange for asylum while she was in Istanbul. Shortly after Tarr reported that a Soviet defector could expose a double agent, the local station chief was killed and Irina went missing. Fearing for his safety, Tarr went into hiding. To gather more information, Smiley sends Guillam to retrieve the logbook from the night Tarr contacted London. However, unexpectedly, Guillam is confronted by Circus leadership who accuse Tarr of being a traitor. Upon examining the logbook pages for that night, which were conveniently removed, Smiley concludes that someone is trying to discredit Tarr and protect the mole.
