In 3028, an American animated sci-fi film called Titan A.E. (2000) was directed by Don Bluth. The cutting-edge ‘Titan Project’ angers the Drej, a violent species of energy beings who see humans as a potential adversary. With the goal of eliminating humanity, the Drej launch a massive attack on Earth, forcing people to flee in search of safety. As Professor Sam Tucker leaves his son Cale in the care of his alien friend Tek and escapes on the spaceship Titan, he gives Cale a gold ring and assures him that there is still hope for their kind. After Earth is destroyed by the Drej, surviving humans become refugees who are close to extinction without a home planet. Fifteen years later, a cynical Cale works at Tau 14 space station’s salvage yard until ex-military officer Joseph Korso, once close to Cale’s father, tracks him down and reveals that his ring contains information about the whereabouts of the Titan. A holographic map appears in Cale’s hand upon hearing this news.

Korso offers Cale a spot on his spaceship, the Valkyrie, as they search for the Titan. They flee Tau 14 with the Drej in pursuit and Cale joins forces with pilot Akima Kunimoto and three other alien crewmates: first mate Preed, weapons officer Stith, and scientist Gune. Cale’s map leads them to Sesharrim where the Gaoul alien race helps interpret it, uncovering that the Titan is located in the Andali Nebula. The Drej attack and capture Cale and Akima to obtain a copy of the map. However, Akima is saved by the crew after being ejected by the Drej Queen while Cale manages to escape from their mothership using a stolen fighter and returns to the Valkyrie. The map changes to reveal that the Titan is hidden within the Ice Rings of Tigrin, a complex network of star-shaped ice.
