James Cameron directed, wrote, produced, and co-edited Titanic (1997), a powerful American film blending historical facts with fictionalized elements. The story revolves around the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic in 1912. A year earlier, Brock Lovett and his team embarked on a dive to the wreck of RMS Titanic aboard the research vessel Akademik Mstislav Keldysh. Their primary objective was to retrieve a safe believed to hold the iconic Heart of the Ocean diamond. To their surprise, they instead discovered a drawing of a young nude woman wearing the necklace on April 14, 1912 – the same day Titanic struck an iceberg and met its tragic fate. Following news coverage of this finding, hundred-year-old Rose Dawson Calvert reaches out to Lovett with her claim to be the woman in the portrait. In hopes of locating the precious necklace, Lovett welcomes Rose aboard Keldysh and listens as she recounts her memories as a passenger on Titanic.

In 1912 Southampton, Rose DeWitt Bukater, a 17-year-old accompanied by her wealthy fiancé Caledon ‘Cal’ Hockley and widowed mother Ruth, set off on the Titanic. Ruth is insistent that Rose’s marriage to Cal will solve their financial struggles and maintain their upper-class status. Distraught over her loveless engagement, Rose contemplates suicide by climbing over the stern railing. However, Jack Dawson, a struggling young artist, persuades her to come back on deck and they form a friendship. As their bond grows, Jack confesses his love for Rose. Despite objections from Cal and Ruth, Rose initially pushes away Jack’s advances but ultimately realizes she has fallen for him.
