To Have and Have Not (1944)
To Have and Have Not (1944) is a romantic war adventure film directed by Howard Hawks, loosely based on Ernest Hemingway’s 1937 novel of the same name. The story follows Harry Morgan, a world-weary man operating a sport-fishing boat called the Queen Conch in Fort-de-France, Martinique during the summer of 1940. The island is now under the control of pro-German Vichy France after the fall of France. Despite this, Harry continues to make a decent living by chartering his boat to tourists with the help of his friend Eddie, who has fallen into alcoholism. However, tensions are high on the island as many are sympathetic to Free France. Harry’s current client Johnson owes him $825 but claims he will get the funds from the bank when it opens tomorrow.
At his hotel, Harry is approached by the owner, Gérard, also known as ‘Frenchy’, who urges him to aid the French Resistance by smuggling people onto the island. However, Harry remains resolute in keeping himself removed from the current political situation. While at the hotel, he meets Marie Browning, a young American wanderer who just arrived from Rio. To avoid being pursued by a drunk man named Johnson, she performs a duet with pianist Cricket and his ensemble in the hotel bar. A perceptive observer, Harry notices Slim stealing from Johnson’s pocket and tracks her to her room across from his. He confronts her and retrieves her stolen wallet, containing $1,400 in traveler’s cheques and a plane ticket for an early morning departure before banks open.
