To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)
To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), the American legal drama film directed by Robert Mulligan and adapted by Horton Foote from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, follows the story of young Scout Finch and her older brother Jem as they navigate their childhood in Maycomb, Alabama during the 1930s. Narrated by an adult Scout, the children live with their widowed father Atticus and their African-American housekeeper Calpurnia. One summer, the siblings and their friend Dill spend their days playing games and searching for Arthur ‘Boo’ Radley, a reclusive neighbor who rarely leaves his home. Although they have never seen Boo, Jem has occasionally discovered small items left inside a tree knothole on his property – including a broken pocket watch, spelling bee medal, pocket knife, and two carved soap dolls resembling Jem and Scout themselves.
Atticus, a lawyer, strongly believes in fairness, turning the other cheek, and fighting for one’s beliefs. As a result of working with many poor farmer clients who compensate him with various goods such as produce and firewood, his work often exposes Scout and Jem to the town’s prejudiced views influenced by poverty. As a result of this exposure, the children mature at an accelerated rate. When the local judge asks Atticus to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of assaulting Mayella Ewell, tensions rise in the town. This also leads to Jem and Scout facing teasing from their peers at school.
