To the Bone (2017) is an American drama film, written and directed by Marti Noxon. It follows the story of a young woman, played by Lily Collins, as she battles anorexia. Ellen, a 20-year-old college dropout, returns home to her stepmother and father’s house after undergoing an in-patient program with no success. Her father is absent and leaves the responsibility to her stepmother, Susan, who arranges for Ellen to see Dr. William Beckham, a specialist who urges her to join his patient program. Though hesitant at first, Ellen’s younger sister ultimately convinces her to try it out. She moves in with six other patients – five women and Luke, a positive ballet dancer who is recovering from both anorexia and a knee injury. Luke serves as a moral support for the group and takes particular interest in Ellen’s art after revealing himself as her fan.

During a family-therapy session with Beckham, Ellen’s father is absent. Prior to this, Ellen had been living with her mother until she suddenly left for Phoenix, Arizona with her same-sex partner. It comes to light that a girl who had committed suicide had cited Ellen’s artwork on Tumblr as an influence. Despite promising to improve, Ellen continues to lose weight. She does make progress by changing her name to Eli and forming close relationships within the household. However, things take an unexpected turn when Luke kisses Eli and confesses his feelings for her. Eli panics and rejects him immediately. Later on, Eli finds out that Megan, another resident in the house, had miscarried after resuming her purging at 12 weeks pregnant. This news sends Eli into a downward spiral and she decides to flee from the house.
