To the Wonder (2012) is an American experimental romantic drama film written and directed by Terrence Malick, following the story of Neil, an American traveler who falls for Marina, a Ukrainian divorcée living in Paris with her young daughter Tatiana. As their love blossoms, they journey to Mont St. Michel in Normandy. Eventually, Neil invites Marina and Tatiana to join him in his hometown of Oklahoma, where he has taken a job as an environmental inspector. However, as time goes on, their fiery relationship begins to cool. Marina finds comfort in the company of Father Quintana, a troubled Catholic priest grappling with his own beliefs. Meanwhile, Tatiana feels homesick and struggles to make connections at her new school, often expressing her dissatisfaction with Neil as a father figure.
After Marina’s visa expired, she and her daughter went back to France. While working as an environmental inspector, Neil meets up with his childhood friend Jane. Delicately, Jane reveals that her farm is struggling financially due to her former husband’s gambling debts. As their romance blossoms, Neil’s inability to fully commit leads to their relationship falling apart. Meanwhile, Marina finds herself missing Oklahoma and unable to secure a job after returning to France and giving Tatiana back to her father. Ultimately, Marina returns to Oklahoma and reunites with Neil, and the two tie the knot in a civil ceremony.
