Tomb Raider (2018)
Tomb Raider (2018), the action-adventure film directed by Roar Uthaug, features a screenplay by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons from a story written by Evan Daugherty and Robertson-Dworet. This American and British co-production is based on the 2013 video game of the same name, as well as incorporating aspects from its rebooted sequel by Crystal Dynamics. It is also the third installment in the Tomb Raider film series. In the story, Lara Croft makes a living as a bike courier after her father, Lord Richard Croft, goes missing. Following a collision with a police car, she is arrested but bailed out by Richard’s business partner, Ana Miller. Despite believing her father to still be alive, Lara must inherit her birthright in order to prevent their family estate from being sold off. Reluctantly accepting this responsibility, she discovers an underground chamber in Richard’s tomb where she views his research on Himiko, the legendary Queen of Yamatai who was said to possess power over life and death. Despite Richard’s warnings to destroy this information, Lara goes against his wishes and delves deeper into her father’s findings.
After surviving rapids and narrowly avoiding a waterfall with the wreck of a wartime airplane, Lara reunites with her father who has been secretly residing on the island to prevent Trinity from discovering Himiko’s tomb. Despite his objections, Lara sets out the following morning to acquire Mathias’ satellite phone. With the help of Lu and other slaves, they create a diversion that enables Lara to sneak into the Trinity camp and retrieve the phone. In the midst of chaos, Richard heads towards Himiko’s tomb but is eventually captured by Mathias. He then convinces Lara to unlock the tomb, a lifelong goal that she has prepared for since her childhood. As they make their way inside, the entrance collapses in an explosion, granting them access to a tomb that has remained hidden for over two thousand years.
