Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010)
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) is an Australian action-adventure war drama film based on the 1993 novel of the same name. It is written and directed by Stuart Beattie. The film opens with a video log by Ellie Linton, a high school student from Wirrawee. As she ponders how to share their story, she decides to start at the beginning. Ellie sets out on a camping trip to ‘Hell’s Gate’, accompanied by her childhood friend Corrie McKenzie and her boyfriend Kevin Holmes, as well as Homer Yannos, Lee Takkam, Robyn Mathers, and Fiona ‘Fi’ Maxwell. On their second night camping, Ellie is awakened by the sound of military aircraft in the sky above them.
As the group returns to Wirrawee, they are met with an eerie stillness. Their homes sit abandoned, void of power, internet, and telephone service. From a hilltop vantage point, they can see that the only sources of light in the town are coming from the hospital and showground. However, upon reaching the showground, they make a shocking discovery – the townspeople are being held captive by a foreign military force. Terror grips Ellie as she witnesses a man being mercilessly shot in the head. In her panicked state, she retreats too quickly and is immediately spotted by a passing searchlight.
