Too Young to Die? (1990) is a television movie starring Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis that tackles the controversial topic of the death penalty. Based on a true story, Lewis portrays Amanda, a 15-year-old girl who has always been let down by the adults in her life. Following her disclosure of abuse from her stepfather, Amanda’s mother and stepfather abandon her. After a failed marriage, she leaves town and falls into the grasp of Billy, a hustler. She eventually meets Mike, a soldier who offers her shelter while she gets back on her feet. Despite their age difference, Amanda and Mike develop a romantic relationship. However, when their relationship is discovered by Mike’s superiors, he ends things with Amanda, leaving her once again alone and vulnerable on the streets.

Shortly after their reunion, Billy coerces Amanda to join him once again. After a night of substance abuse, Billy manipulates Amanda into seeking revenge against Mike by taking his life. The duo breaks into Mike’s home and abducts both him and his girlfriend, taking them to an oilfield outside of town. With Billy’s knife in hand, Amanda fatally stabs Mike. Although still young, Amanda is not spared from facing the consequences of her actions as she is tried as an adult. The prosecuting attorney relentlessly portrays her as a symbol of the new generation of delinquent youth who must be made an example of. Despite efforts from her own lawyer to shed light on how society has failed Amanda rather than solely blaming her for her actions, the jury remains unsympathetic and convicts her of murder.
