Despite telling Sherman he is heading to Stockholm, she discovers he is actually flying to East Berlin and decides to follow him. When they arrive, Armstrong is greeted by representatives of the East German government. As Sherman comes to terms with Armstrong’s defection, she realizes that staying with him means sacrificing her home and family due to the tense atmosphere of the Cold War.
Armstrong meets with a ‘farmer’ who is actually part of the East German scientific community. His defection, unbeknownst to them, has simply been a ploy to gain their trust and gather information about their anti-missile capabilities. With plans in place to escape back to the West through an underground network known as π, Armstrong’s deception takes a dangerous turn when he is unexpectedly followed by his assigned companion, East German security officer Hermann Gromek. Realizing the truth about Armstrong’s true allegiance and intentions, Gromek calls for backup but a violent struggle ensues, resulting in Gromek’s death at the hands of Armstrong and the farmer’s wife.
