Directed by John Curran, the Australian drama film Tracks (2013) stars Mia Wasikowska and Adam Driver. Based on Robyn Davidson’s memoir of the same name, it follows her nine-month camel trek through the Australian desert. The film was featured at both the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival (Special Presentation) and the 70th Venice International Film Festival. In 1977, Robyn moves to Alice Springs with plans to embark on a 2,700-kilometre journey across the deserts to the Indian Ocean with her dog, Diggity, and four dromedary camels. She learns how to train camels from local farmers in exchange for room and board. During a visit from friends, she meets National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan. When Robyn expresses her need for additional funds for the trip, Rick suggests she write to National Geographic for support.

National Geographic purchases Robyn’s story and provides her with funding for the trip. As part of the agreement, Rick is responsible for capturing photos for the story. However, Robyn becomes frustrated with Rick and his photographs during one of their stops. She expresses her frustration and later the two engage in a sexual encounter. While Rick sees this as the beginning of something more, Robyn sees it only as a casual fling. During their journey, they come across an indigenous group and Rick takes photos of a private ceremony despite Robyn’s disapproval. As they continue, Robyn discovers that their route passes through sacred land which can only be crossed by women with a guide. However, due to Rick’s actions, no one is willing to assist her.
