Traitor (2008) is an American spy thriller film written and directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, based on a story by Steve Martin. Samir Horn, an Arabic-speaking Sudanese-American and devout Muslim, lost his father to a car bomb in his childhood. As an adult, he becomes an arms dealer and gets arrested during a deal in Yemen. Samir’s friendly relationship with Omar, who later arranges their escape from jail together, introduces him to Fareed, a leader of the terrorist organization al-Nathir. FBI Special Agent Roy Clayton starts suspecting that Samir has become radicalized and begins monitoring him closely. With his experience as a U.S. Army Special Forces Engineer Sergeant, Samir joins al-Nathir and helps orchestrate a bombing at the U.S. Consulate in Nice, France. However, it is revealed that Samir is actually working undercover for Carter, a U.S. intelligence contractor. When he finds out that innocent lives were lost during the attack despite their efforts, he is left devastated.
Impressed by Samir’s skills, Fareed introduces him to leader Nathir, who discloses a plot to place suicide bombers on 50 buses in the US during Thanksgiving. As the most capable member of their group, Samir is instructed to act as liaison to each of the al-Nathir sleeper bombers. However, Carter unintentionally disrupts a meeting between Samir and Omar, resulting in Omar killing Carter. In a desperate attempt to escape, Samir reveals his deep cover to Clayton and flees to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. While investigating, Clayton makes a startling discovery – the deaths in Nice were all staged except for one. On board a cargo ship headed for Marseille, France, Samir takes matters into his own hands and eliminates Nathir and Fareed. He then confronts an enraged Omar about their betrayal of Islam by targeting innocent people.
