The psychological thriller film, Trance (2013), was directed by Danny Boyle and written by Joe Ahearne and John Hodge from a story by Ahearne. During a heist at an auction house, the thieves steal what they believe to be a valuable painting. In the midst of the robbery, Simon Newton attacks their leader Franck and is knocked unconscious. But when Franck opens the package, he finds only an empty frame. It turns out that Simon, who was the ‘inside man’ for the heist, had betrayed them. To locate the missing painting, the thieves kidnap and torture Simon, but due to his amnesia caused by the blow to his head, he cannot remember where it is hidden. Thus, they seek out a hypnotherapist to help jog his memory.

Simon selects Elizabeth Lamb from a roster and presents himself under an alias. He claims to be searching for misplaced keys, with the intention of being led to the painting. However, Elizabeth quickly sees past Simon’s guise and compels the thieves to bargain with her. In exchange for a portion of the profits from selling the artwork, Elizabeth continues to mesmerize Simon. During their sessions, he confesses that his gambling addiction entangled him with Franck. In order to settle his debts, Franck requested Simon’s aid in stealing the painting. In one session, Simon recollects that during the robbery, he removed the painting from its frame and concealed it within his attire.
