Treasure Island (1990)
Treasure Island (1990) is a film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s well-known novel, directed by Fraser C. Heston. The story centers around Jim Hawkins and his mother, who run the Admiral Benbow inn. Their peaceful days are disrupted when an aging pirate known as Captain Bones shows up, constantly on guard for a one-legged foe and causing trouble for the locals. When another pirate, Black Dog, engages in a fierce sword fight with Bones before fleeing, it becomes clear that danger lurks at every turn. Tragedy strikes when Bones suffers a heart attack and hands Jim the key to his chest before passing away. In search of rent money, Jim and his mother open the chest only to be attacked by Pew and Black Dog who are after some important papers.
Fortunately, Dr. Livesey and his men arrive in time to defend them and retrieve the papers which reveal a map to Captain Flint’s hidden treasure worth £700,000 on the island shown. Trelawney secures the ship Hispaniola and employs Captain Smollett to lead, while one-legged publican Long John Silver helps assemble a crew of sailors. Livesey and Jim join as ship’s doctor and cabin boy respectively. As Smollett prepares for potential mutiny, Trelawney becomes irritated, convinced of his excessive suspicion. Later, Jim sneaks into an apple barrel seeking a snack and overhears three sailors – Silver, Israel Hands, and Dick Johnson- plotting rebellion. Upon sighting land, Jim hastily informs Livesey, Trelawney, and Smollet who devise their own secret strategy in response.
