Tropic Thunder (2008)
Tropic Thunder (2008), a satirical action comedy film directed and co-written by Ben Stiller, tells the story of a film adaptation of Hook-handed Vietnam veteran Staff Sergeant John ‘Four Leaf’ Tayback’s memoir. The cast includes has-been action hero Tugg Speedman, five-time Academy Award-winning Australian method actor Kirk Lazarus, closeted homosexual rapper Alpa Chino, and drug-addicted comedian Jeff Portnoy. Despite newcomer supporting actor Kevin Sandusky’s reliability, the rest of the actors cause chaos for inexperienced director Damien Cockburn. With the project falling behind schedule and a million-dollar pyrotechnics scene going to waste, studio executive Les Grossman issues an ultimatum: get the cast under control or face cancellation.
On Four Leaf’s suggestion, Damien takes the actors into the heart of the jungle to film in a ‘guerrilla-style’ manner using hidden cameras and strategically planned special effects explosions. Equipped with blanks-firing guns, a route map, and scene listing leading to a helicopter at the end, the group is unaware that they have been dropped in the Golden Triangle – home of the notorious Flaming Dragon gang known for producing heroin. As they prepare to embark on their journey, Damien accidentally sets off an old land mine and gets blown up, shocking everyone. Tugg, convinced that Damien’s explosion was staged to enhance their performances, reassures the rest of the cast that he is still alive and filming continues. Kirk remains skeptical but reluctantly joins them as they try to escape from the treacherous jungle.
