Trouble with the Curve (2012)
The sports drama Trouble with the Curve (2012), directed by Robert Lorenz, follows aging scout Gus Lobel of the Atlanta Braves. He fears this may be his final assignment unless he can prove his worth to the organization. Known for being resistant to change in the game, especially when it comes to advanced statistics, Gus’s job is on the line as junior executive Phillip Sanderson competes for a promotion. Pete, Gus’s friend and boss, is hesitant to let him go but faces pressure from Phillip. Suspecting that Gus may be hiding health issues, Pete reaches out to Mickey, Gus’s daughter and a driven lawyer aiming for partnership at her firm. He asks her to join Gus on a scouting trip to North Carolina where they will evaluate top prospect Bo Gentry, who boasts impressive stats and is a potential top draft pick.
Despite their strained relationship, Mickey agrees to accompany Gus. As they travel together, she notices that his sight is failing and actively assists him in compensating for this weakness. Along the way, they reunite with an old acquaintance of Gus’s, Johnny ‘The Flame’ Flanagan, who now works as a scout for the Boston Red Sox. To Mickey’s surprise, Johnny develops an interest in her. As the Red Sox have the first pick in the upcoming draft, just ahead of the Braves, Johnny is also scouting Bo Gentry. Curious about her past, Mickey asks Gus why he left her with relatives she barely knew after her mother passed away. He reveals that during one of his scouting trips, a child molester approached her and he had to intervene to protect her.
