Troy (2004) is an epic historical war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by David Benioff. Set in 1250 BC, the film tells the story of King Agamemnon’s quest to unite the Greek kingdoms. The heroic warrior Achilles fights for Agamemnon, despite his disdain for the king’s tyrannical ways. Meanwhile, Prince Hector of Troy and his brother Paris are negotiating a peace treaty with Menelaus, King of Sparta. However, Paris begins an affair with Menelaus’ wife, Queen Helen, and smuggles her aboard his ship as they return home. Hector reluctantly agrees to bring Helen to Troy after initially being angry about the situation. Infuriated by Paris’ actions, Menelaus turns to Agamemnon for help in taking down Troy. In pursuit of control over the Aegean Sea, Agamemnon sends Odysseus, King of Ithaca, to convince Achilles to join their efforts.
In the city of Troy, King Priam warmly receives Helen upon the return of Hector and Paris. The King then realizes that war is inevitable and begins preparations. As expected, the Greeks arrive with a force of 50,000 soldiers and swiftly take control of the Trojan beach with help from Achilles and his Myrmidons. In a provocative move, Achilles loots the temple of Apollo and takes Briseis, the priestess and relative of Paris and Hector, as his captive. However, his anger flares when Agamemnon spitefully claims her for himself. This leads Achilles to refuse any assistance in the siege from Agamemnon. Meanwhile, the Trojans gather their 25,000-strong army to strategize against their Greek invaders. While General Glaucus puts faith in Troy’s sturdy walls and powerful army, others advocate for diplomacy as a solution. Additionally, Paris declares his intention to challenge Menelaus for Helen’s hand in marriage.
