True Grit (2010)
The American Western film True Grit (2010) was directed, written, produced, and edited by the Coen brothers. While traveling to Fort Smith, Arkansas, fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross’s father is killed by hired hand Tom Chaney. Upon arriving in town to collect her father’s body, Mattie learns that Chaney has most likely escaped with “Lucky” Ned Pepper and his gang into Indian Territory, where the local sheriff has no jurisdiction. Wanting to bring Chaney to justice, Mattie seeks out a Deputy U.S. Marshal and receives three recommendations from the sheriff. Ultimately, she chooses Rooster Cogburn due to his reputation for being the ‘meanest’ of the three. Although initially hesitant due to doubts about her determination and resources, Cogburn eventually agrees after Mattie raises enough money through determined horse trading. Meanwhile, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf also arrives in town on the hunt for Chaney for the murder of a state senator.
He suggests teaming up with Cogburn but Mattie declines his offer as she wants Chaney to be punished in Arkansas for her father’s death rather than in Texas. Although Mattie wants to travel with Cogburn, he ends up leaving without her. She then joins forces with LaBoeuf to capture Chaney and split the reward. Despite catching up with the lawmen, Mattie is punished by LaBoeuf for her ‘insolence’ until Cogburn intervenes. This event, along with their conflicting views on William Quantrill, causes Cogburn to terminate his partnership with LaBoeuf. As a result, LaBoeuf heads out on his own to track down Chaney. While searching a rural dugout, Cogburn and Mattie encounter outlaws Quincy and Moon who surrender after Cogburn shoots and wounds Moon. Initially, the outlaws claim they have no information on Ned Pepper or Chaney, but Cogburn persuades Moon to cooperate by using his injury as leverage.
