Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988)
Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) is a biographical comedy-drama movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Detroit’s Preston Tucker harbored a passion for car-making since his youth. During the Second World War, he created an armored vehicle for the military and earned profits producing gun turrets for planes in a small workshop near his Ypsilanti residence. With the unwavering support of his extended family, especially his wife Vera, children Preston Jr., Noble, and Marilyn Lee, Tucker embarks on a mission to create the ‘car of tomorrow’. The ‘Tucker Torpedo’ boasts groundbreaking safety features such as disc brakes, seatbelts, a retractable windshield, and headlights that swivel with every turn. To aid in the design process, Tucker recruits young designer Alex Tremulis and seeks financial backing from New York businessman Abe Karatz.
Through a stock issue, Tucker and Karatz successfully acquire the enormous Dodge Chicago Plant to begin manufacturing. To handle the day-to-day operations of their new venture, Abe hires Robert Bennington to lead the Tucker Corporation. The launch of ‘the car of tomorrow’ is met with great enthusiasm from shareholders and the general public, but doubts arise within the Tucker board of directors about his ability to overcome upcoming challenges in both technical and financial aspects. In response, they send Tucker on a publicity campaign while attempting to assert complete control over the company. As Tucker travels the country, Bennington and the directors make changes to the design of the Tucker 48, opting for a more conventional approach instead of emphasizing its superior safety and engineering advancements as originally intended.
