Tulip Fever (2017)
Tulip Fever (2017), a historical romantic drama directed by Justin Chadwick and written by Deborah Moggach and Tom Stoppard, is based on Moggach’s novel of the same name. It follows the story of Sophia, an orphan raised in a Dutch convent during the time of tulip mania in the 17th century. She is offered a marriage proposal from Cornelis, a much older spice merchant, which allows her to leave the convent and provide dowries for her sisters to emigrate to New Amsterdam. Three years into their marriage, Sophia is unhappy with Cornelis’ sole focus on producing an heir. He believes his past mistake with his previous wife – choosing to save their second child over her – has caused this misfortune in conceiving. He sees it as punishment from God for his actions.
Cornelis enlists a painter to ensure his memory is that of a man with a stunning young wife, in case he does not have an heir to carry on his legacy. Sophia agrees, but upon the arrival of the artist Jan to paint their portrait, she and Jan develop feelings for each other. Jan sends Sophia a note, requesting a vase of tulips from her. She fulfills his request and they consummate their love. Meanwhile, Sophia’s friend Maria, who works as the housemaid, is in a relationship with the local fishmonger Willem. Willem has been successful in the tulip market and plans to sell his business to start a life with Maria. To do so, he sells it to another fishmonger. In order to rendezvous with Jan, Sophia borrows Maria’s cloak.
