Tully (2018)
Tully (2018), an American comedy-drama directed by Jason Reitman and written by Diablo Cody, follows Marlo who is unexpectedly pregnant with her third child with husband Drew. The couple already has two children – daughter Sarah and son Jonah, who struggles with an undiagnosed behavioral disorder resulting in Marlo’s nightly ritual of brushing his skin to minimize his sensitivity to stimuli. Despite her brother Craig’s offer to pay for a night nanny as a baby gift, Marlo declines. She often dreams of an underwater mermaid and her son’s aggressive outbursts. However, after giving birth, Marlo becomes even more overwhelmed and exhausted. When Jonah’s school principal suggests transferring him to another school due to their inability to handle him, an angry Marlo storms out and later retrieves the number for the night nanny.
After Tully, the nanny, arrives at Marlo’s house that evening, she quickly takes charge. Despite initial awkwardness, the two form a close bond over multiple nights. Tully not only proves to be an exceptional caregiver for the baby, but also helps out around the house and bakes cupcakes for Jonah’s class. She explains that her main purpose is to provide support and assistance for Marlo. As a result, Marlo begins to reconnect with her family and herself; singing, cooking delicious meals, and having fun with her children. However, one night Tully shows up visibly upset after a fight with her roommate who disapproved of her bringing home men. In a spur of the moment suggestion, Tully proposes going out for drinks in the city. Though hesitant at first, Marlo eventually agrees and they head to Marlo’s old neighborhood in Bushwick, Brooklyn. While at a bar there, Tully drops a bombshell – she can no longer work for Marlo because her sole purpose was to ‘bridge a gap’. An angered Marlo yells at Tully for being immature and not understanding how aging will eventually take away her youthfulness.
