Tumbleweeds (1999)
Tumbleweeds (1999), an American comedy-drama film directed by Gavin O’Connor, tells the story of Mary Jo Walker and her daughter Ava. The screenplay, co-written by O’Connor and his then-wife Angela Shelton, is based on Shelton’s childhood memories of traveling with her mother who had a habit of getting remarried. Mary Jo is a single mother who deals with trouble by packing up her car and hitting the road with Ava in search of better opportunities. The film begins with Mary Jo standing up to a man, a familiar occurrence for Ava, prompting the young girl to pack her suitcase in preparation for their next journey. As they set off once again, the two make their way towards Missouri to reunite with an old flame, but when it doesn’t go as planned, Mary Jo agrees to Ava’s wish of heading west to see the Pacific Ocean.
In an attempt to leave her past behind, Mary Jo and her daughter throw out her old clothing during their journey. They are grateful for the help of truck driver Jack Ranson, who coincidentally reappears in their lives after they settle in San Diego. Despite her initial independence, Mary Jo once again puts a man before herself and her daughter by quitting her job. While it appears that Ava’s life has improved, she faces challenges such as losing a jealous friend and landing a lead role in the school play. She also feels elated when she gets a boyfriend who takes her to see a movie. However, things take a turn for the worse when Jack becomes verbally abusive towards Mary Jo.
