Turner & Hooch (1989), an American comedy starring Tom Hanks and Beasley the Dog respectively, follows the story of Scott Turner, an attentive police investigator in serene Cypress Beach, California, who is preparing to move to a more thrilling job in Sacramento. As he introduces his replacement David Sutton to the town’s sights, Scott bids farewell to his close friend Amos Reed. However, their plans are interrupted when they are called to investigate the discovery of $8,000 at the beach. Meanwhile, local seafood mogul Walter Boyett has one of his employees murdered for stealing a matching bundle of cash. Amos hears the commotion and is tragically stabbed by one of Boyett’s henchmen. As Amos’ body is found, Scott must take care of his Dogue de Bordeaux named Hooch – the sole witness to Amos’ murder. Despite wanting to leave Hooch with new veterinarian Emily Carson, she insists that looking after him will be beneficial for Scott.

Hooch’s rowdy behavior instantly clashes with Scott’s precise lifestyle. Upon returning from purchasing dog food, an enraged Scott banishes Hooch after discovering his home completely destroyed. Despite being kicked out, Hooch later reappears with Emily’s collie, Camille. Scott then takes Camille to the veterinary clinic where he is invited inside by Emily. As they begin painting her house together, their mutual attraction begins to blossom. Meanwhile, Scott brings Hooch to the police precinct, which happens to be across from a wedding venue. During the celebration, Hooch recognizes the wedding photographer as Amos’ killer and pursues him. Although the culprit manages to escape, Scott identifies him as Zack Gregory – a Boyett Seafood employee and former Marine with multiple prior arrests.
