Turning Red (2022)
In 2022, Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released Turning Red (2022), an American animated fantasy comedy film. Set in 2002 Toronto, it follows 13-year-old Mei Lee and her family. Mei helps out at their ancestral temple and strives to make her mother proud, while keeping her own interests, like being a fan of the boy band 4*Town with her friends Miriam, Priya, and Abby, a secret from her strict and overprotective mother. One night, Ming discovers Mei’s crush on Devon and unintentionally embarrasses her in public. This triggers a nightmare for Mei involving red pandas. The next morning, she wakes up as a large red panda and learns that she transforms when experiencing intense emotions. Despite trying to hide this from her parents by wearing a touque to school to cover her reddish hair after transforming back into human form, Ming eventually realizes the truth when she embarrasses Mei at school again. This sends Mei running home in tears and panic while struggling with her transformations.
According to Ming and Jin, Sun Yee was given the power to transform in order to safeguard her daughters and village during a war. This ability was passed down to all female descendants, which has now become problematic in modern times. Therefore, a ritual must be performed during a lunar eclipse next month to seal the red panda spirit in a talisman. After Mei’s friends stumble upon her transformation, they take a liking to it. Mei realizes that by focusing on her friends, she can control her transformations. Ming agrees for Mei to continue her regular life, but forbids her from attending 4*Town’s upcoming concert. In secret, the girls raise money at school by exploiting Mei’s red panda form’s popularity while misleading Ming about how Mei spends her time. To acquire the final $100, Mei agrees to attend school bully Tyler’s birthday party as the red panda. At the party, she is dismayed to learn that the concert falls on the same night as her ritual. Fueled by anger after Tyler insults her family, she attacks him and terrifies the other children.
