Directed by Terry Gilliam, 12 Monkeys (1995) is an American science fiction thriller film that depicts a world devastated by a deadly virus. The survivors are forced to live underground while rumors circulate about the Army of the Twelve Monkeys being responsible for the outbreak. In 2035, James Cole is chosen from among the prisoners living in an underground compound beneath Philadelphia to travel back in time and locate the original virus. He agrees to do so in exchange for a reduced sentence. However, he is troubled by recurring dreams involving a foot chase and shooting at an airport. When he finally arrives in Baltimore in 1990, instead of his planned destination of 1996, he is arrested and sent to a mental hospital where Dr. Kathryn Railly diagnoses him. It is here that he meets Jeffrey Goines, another patient with extreme environmentalist and anti-corporate beliefs.
Cole is questioned by a panel of doctors about the virus outbreak, but his explanation that it has already occurred and cannot be stopped falls on deaf ears. Following an escape attempt, he is drugged and imprisoned in a cell, only to mysteriously vanish and wake up back in 2035. He undergoes yet another interrogation, during which the scientists present him with a garbled voicemail supporting the Army of the 12 Monkeys’ involvement in the epidemic. They also show him photos of multiple suspects, including Goines. Despite their doubts, they offer Cole a second chance to complete his mission and send him back in time once again. During his brief visit to World War I, he crosses paths with another prisoner who was also sent through time – José. Tragically, Cole is wounded in the leg and unexpectedly transported to 1996.
