The film, Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), is an American-Mexican Western directed by Don Siegel and starring Shirley MacLaine and Clint Eastwood. Set after the American Civil War, a former Northern soldier named Hogan rescues a woman from bandits attempting to rape her. After he dispatches the bandits, the woman reveals herself to be a nun and begs for his protection from French soldiers who are searching for her as a supporter of the Juarista rebels. Despite initially hesitating due to his own plans, Hogan agrees to help when he learns that Sister Sara has knowledge of the French garrison where she has been teaching Spanish to its soldiers. He had previously made arrangements with the Mexican revolutionaries to attack the garrison in exchange for half of its treasury.

As they make their way towards the camp, dodging French troops, Hogan is taken aback by the nun’s tendency to swear and drink whiskey. Despite being shot at by Yaquis and sustaining a serious injury, Hogan remains determined to destroy the French ammunition train. In order to numb the pain for removing the arrow embedded in his shoulder, Sara administers whiskey, causing Hogan to become intoxicated. However, due to his injured shoulder, Hogan is unable to climb the trestle. When Sara expresses her inability to do so as well in order to set the charges, Hogan reminds her of her debt for saving her life. Reluctantly, she agrees and they successfully blow up the train. In his drunken state, Hogan confesses his feelings for Sara and his resentment towards her being a nun.
