U Turn (1997)
U Turn (1997) is a neo-noir crime thriller directed by renowned filmmaker Oliver Stone. The plot follows the story of Bobby Cooper, a struggling drifter who finds himself in a tough spot when his red 1964½ Ford Mustang Convertible breaks down in Superior, Arizona. Penniless and stranded, Bobby crosses paths with Jake and Grace McKenna, a married couple also facing their own financial struggles. Both Jake and Grace separately offer Bobby money to kill the other, leaving him desperate and filled with fear. Eventually, Bobby decides to pursue Grace’s proposition and eliminate Jake in order to start a new life together with her by using his ill-gotten gains for a fresh start elsewhere.
With Grace’s help, Bobby successfully eliminates their target, Jake, and they flee with a hefty sum of $200,000. However, their escape from Superior is halted when the Sheriff, who had been involved in an affair with Grace, intercepts them. In self-defense, Grace takes down the Sheriff. In the midst of the chaos, she realizes that Bobby has possession of the car keys. A struggle ensues between them as they fight for control at the edge of a steep decline. Despite his weakened state from injuries sustained during their mission, Bobby manages to overpower Grace and fatally shoot her. However, in her final moments, Grace also fires a shot at Bobby’s abdomen. In a desperate attempt to reach safety and seek medical attention for his wounds, Bobby limps up the treacherous cliff despite a broken leg.
